Dr. R. Atallah's journey in Canada

That concludes the 2nd part of the traveling fellowship! I had the privilege to visit the Sunnybrook Hospital and Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Center in Toronto, Canada. The largest orthopaedic center in Canada, and home of orthopaedic royalty, such as Dr. Tile and Dr. Schatzker.

Interesting to see the contrast to the previous fellowship visit with regards to work-life balance, surgical output, and addressing issues such as OR-nurse shortages. It was also great to attend the Holland Bone and Joint Program Research Day and hear about the great number of research projects led by Dr. Cari Whyne, with a large focus on Machine Learning and AI.

Differences in practice and novel insights

Traveling farther from home automatically results in greater differences in practice and novel insights (regarding approaches to the hip in both primary/revision cases, more use of uncemented implants, lack of use of Dual-mobility constructs, ways to counter increasing healthcare costs). A big thanks to Dr. Albert Yee and the whole group for the hospitality, in and outside the hospital.

Having a bit more spare time on hands also brings new opportunities. Firstly, to get the ball rolling on a couple of research projects. And secondly, to achieve different goals, as I have had the chance to complete my first full marathon at the Niagara Falls International Marathon. Now on to the next and final chapter of the fellowship, headed to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
