My experience with the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City

It was an enriching experience at this renowned, productive, and high-quality institution, where I specialized in arthroplasty, foot and ankle surgery, and limb reconstruction. With more than 30 operating rooms daily and over 160 surgeons, there was almost too much to choose from.

The most striking observations were the arthroplasty days with two operating rooms simultaneously, the large teams of fellows, physician assistants, and scrub technicians working together like well-oiled machines, the availability and use of every conceivable implant and robotic system, and, of course, everyone’s palpable dedication to orthopedics.

Besides the time I spent in the operating room and the outpatient clinic, it was also wonderful to attend the many educational presentations, such as the grand rounds, the weekly simulation sessions, and the HSS Knee & Hip Course. These provided engaging discussions on alignment/bearing philosophies, (non-)robotic technology, revision techniques, and the business/economic aspects of orthopedics.

Back to the Netherlands

Finally, it was a pleasure to live in such a fantastic and vibrant city, explore Manhattan, and host friends and family. Now it’s time to return to the Netherlands, to my own practice with a wealth of new insights!
