The AOFE Clinics is a specialised clinic for amputation surgery and osseointegration prosthesis treatment. The clinic was founded by orthopedic trauma surgeon Dr. Frölke and the rehabilitation specialists Dr. van de Meent and Dr. van der Meer. These doctors have introduced and further developed advanced amputation surgery and rehabilitation in the Netherlands. In 2009 they introduced the osseointegration (click) prosthesis in the Netherlands. The AOFE Clinics has been set up to meet the (inter) national demand for osseointegration prosthesis treatment. The AOFE Clinics focuses entirely on this specialised treatment with the aim to deliver the best and most innovative care to people with arm or leg amputation. In addition, the AOFE Clinics offers the opportunity to further specialize and further develop amputation and prosthetic technology. The AOFE Clinics works closely with similar amputation/osseointegration clinics in Hanover, Berlin and Sydney. The surgery and rehabilitation in the AOFE Clinics always takes place with a multidisciplinary team consisting of an osseointegration surgeon, rehabilitation physician, physiotherapist, prosthetist, occupational therapist and a co-ordinator.
The AOFE Clinics uses the surgery facilities of the Dutch Central Military Hospital (CMH) on the grounds of the UMC Utrecht in The Netherlands. In October 2018, the Dutch department of Defense signed a covenant with the AOFE Clinics for intensive co-operation in the field of innovative amputation and osseointegration care. The osseointegration treatment will thus be integrated into the medical department of Defense and in turn the AOFE Clinics can use the surgery and rehabilitation facilities of Defense as an independent clinic.
The AOFE Clinics uses the rehabilitation facilities of Militairy Rehabilitation Center Aardenburg (MRC) in Doorn in The Netherlands for post-surgery osseointegration rehabilitation. MRC Doorn has the most advanced rehabilitation facilities and is particularly specialized in the rehabilitation of soldiers with injuries as a result of combat related military activities.
